Jakarta's Cinema City Ambition Gets Boost From Netflix

JAKARTA, June 17 (NNN) -- Jakarta's ambition to become a Cinema City has gained momentum after Netflix expressed interest in expanding cooperation on film production and talent development in the Indonesian capital.

Deputy Governor Rano Karno said the discussions took place during a meeting with Netflix executives on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Video Operators Summit (APOS) 2026 in Bali on Wednesday.

“This is not merely an ambition, but a major vision so that the film industry and other creative economy sectors can provide real economic impact for Jakarta,” he said in a statement issued by the Jakarta Provincial Government's Communication, Informatics and Statistics Agency.

Netflix Asia Pacific Public Policy Director Ruben Hattari said strong local content and sustained audience demand have been major drivers of the company’s growth across the Asia-Pacific region, adding that the platform hopes to expand cooperation with Jakarta in film production and talent development.

“After 10 years, we are increasingly convinced that the strength of local content plays a major role in driving Netflix's business growth. Going forward, we hope to establish more cooperation with Jakarta, not only in production but also in talent development in the film industry,” he said.

The discussions also explored opportunities to increase Netflix productions in Jakarta following the completion of the Netflix original film Tygo: Extraction, featuring Lisa of the popular K-pop group Blackpink, which was filmed in the city's Kota Tua area earlier this year.

The Jakarta administration said at least three Netflix film and series projects are planned for production in the city, while Jakarta and Netflix are also preparing a human resource development programme to support the industry's growth.
