Indonesia Reports Death Of Sumatran Elephant

JAKARTA, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A critically endangered Sumatran elephant named Indro died at Tesso Nilo National Park in Riau province on Monday after suffering health complications following the musth period.

"Indro died despite receiving intensive medical treatment for health complications triggered by a loss of appetite following the musth period," a senior official from the park told local media on Monday.

According to the park, the 45-year-old elephant entered the musth period between late April and early May, becoming more aggressive and requiring special safety measures.

Its condition later worsened after a sharp decline in eating and drinking, prompting the veterinary team to provide intensive monitoring, intravenous fluid therapy, and further medical treatment. Although it briefly showed signs of improvement, the elephant did not respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was later pronounced dead.
