NEW YORK, July 2 (NNN-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on residents of the city to switch off everything they can amid the heat, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported.
"New York: it's hot out there, and the power grid is working overtime to keep us cool. Set your AC to 78 degrees, turn off lights/electronics you're not using, and unplug what you can," Mamdani wrote on X.
He added that the city administration is maintaining a 78-degree rule in its buildings, as well as turning off lights during the peak electricity demand.
On Monday, ABC News reported that a heat wave was coming to the central and eastern parts of the United States, with more than 100 million Americans on alert.
Since mid-June, Europe has been experiencing extreme heat. In several countries, air temperatures have reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and in some places have exceeded it.
The highest red level of weather danger has been declared in France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Italy. Previously, the France 24 broadcaster reported that at least 94 million people would face extreme heat in Europe amid abnormally high temperatures.
World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday that more than 1,300 people have died in Europe over the past week from extreme heat.
