"Minions & Monsters" Tops North American Box Office In Opening Weekend
LOS ANGELES, July 6 (NNN-Xinhua) -- Universal Pictures and Illumination's animated comedy film Minions & Monsters took the top spot at the North American box office in its opening weekend, with an estimated three-day cumulative gross of US$36.4 million, according to data from measurement firm Comscore released on Sunday, reported Xinhua.
Minions & Monsters, the seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise, has grossed US$61.4 million in the United States (US) and Canada for the five-day Fourth of July holiday weekend since its July 1 release.
It also took in US$85 million internationally this weekend for a global cumulative gross of US$159.9 million.
After leading the box office for two consecutive weeks, Disney and Pixar's animated film Toy Story 5 dropped to second place this weekend.
The animated sequel film earned US$31 million in its third weekend for a North American total of US$366.3 million through Sunday.
Rounding out the top three, Angel Studios' historical drama Young Washington opened this weekend to a debut of US$20.8 million.
