UN Secretary-General Candidates Set For Debate
NEW YORK, July 10 (NNN-Xinhua) -- All candidates for the position of the next United Nations (UN) secretary-general have been invited to participate in a debate at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) Hall on July 23, UNGA president’s spokeswoman La Neice Collins announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.
In a note to correspondents, Collins said that UNGA President Annalena Baerbock sent a letter to UN member states informing them that all candidates had been invited to the debate.
Additional information on the debate, including details on event registration, will be shared in due course, she added.
There are currently six candidates to be the next UN secretary-general, including four women from Latin America and the Caribbean.
The current UN secretary-general's term of office expires at the end of this year.
The next secretary-general will take over the role on Jan. 1, 2027.
