US, China Hold AI, Trade Talks Ahead Of Trump-Xi Summit

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (NNN-dpa) -- United States (US) and Chinese officials have held talks in New York on trade and the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI), just days before a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington had proposed a mechanism for the two sides to exchange information on AI development.

"We want a shared vision of common goals and common threats," Bessent said on Sunday after what he described as a "very successful" meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

He gave no further details. Bessent recently said the US was open to talks with China on how to reduce risks associated with AI.

Bessent said the two sides also discussed the Board of Trade proposed by Trump.

The talks, held at the New York headquarters of US banking giant JPMorgan Chase, were aimed at laying the groundwork for a successful meeting between Trump and Xi on Thursday, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said.

US media have reported that Xi is expected to arrive in Washington on Wednesday.

Another key issue is likely to be whether the two sides extend their current tariff truce, which expires on November 10.

A senior US government official accused China of failing to fully implement its pledge to ease supplies of critical minerals.

Beijing said the two sides would discuss economic and trade issues, without providing further details.

The Iran war and tensions over Taiwan are also expected to feature at Thursday's summit, while China's ties with Russia could also come up.
