PHNOM PENH, Oct 29 (NNN) -- Malaysian Ambassador to Cambodia Shaharuddin Onn said Malaysia’s strength stems from preserving national unity amid cultural diversity – a value shared with Cambodia and reflected in their close friendship.
He said Malaysians of different ethnicities, religions and cultural backgrounds live together in harmony, united by a shared sense of national identity.
“National Day is not only a remembrance of the birth of our nation. But it is also a remembrance that people of different races, ethnicities, cultures and religious beliefs live in harmony,” he told guests at a packed ballroom in a leading hotel where the 2026 Malaysia National Day celebration was held on Wednesday evening.
Malaysians from all walks of life mingled warmly with Cambodian guests, senior government officials and dignitaries – a testimony to the country’s renowned hospitality and spirit of friendship.
Shaharuddin also drew parallels with Cambodia, noting that the two countries share a common commitment to peace, mutual respect, and social harmony.
“I see Malaysia and Cambodia as partners in peace, partners in progress and partners in prosperity. Next year, it will be a milestone as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of our bilateral relations,” he said.
The special guest at the event, Cambodia’s Tourism Minister Huot Hak, further stressed the vibrant bilateral ties.
“The friendship between Cambodia and Malaysia has grown steadily over the decades. Our relationship holds a historical significance; both countries established ties on Aug 31, 1957, the very day Malaysia declared independence,” said Huot.
