Number Of Hantavirus Cases Rises To 13 – WHO

MOSCOW, May 27 (NNN-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The number of hantavirus cases has risen to 13 after Spanish authorities reported a new case among passengers on the quarantined MV Hondius, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"There are no new deaths reported since May 2. The total number of deaths remains three out of 13 reported cases so far. The situation remains stable. Passengers who got sick are receiving needed care, while others remain in quarantine," Ghebreyesus wrote on X.

The WHO is in close contact with all relevant governments, he added.

An outbreak of the deadly hantavirus occurred in early May on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde. Three people died. Passengers were evacuated, and the vessel, with the body of a passenger who died from the virus on board, set sail for Rotterdam. The ship arrived at the port of Rotterdam on May 18, and the foreign crew members were sent to quarantine in the port area.
