Thousands Of Tourists Evacuated From French Seaside Resort Of Lacanau

LACANAU (France), July 28 (NNN-dpa) -- Thousands of tourists are being evacuated from the French Atlantic coast due to the serious risk of forest fires at the popular seaside resort of Lacanau, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The Bordeaux prefecture ordered the evacuation of campsites and holiday villages in Lacanau and Lacanau Océan on Tuesday morning.

Holidaymakers were advised to take all their luggage with them and to strictly follow the instructions of the emergency services.

Around 4,000 people are affected. It was stated that the town of Lacanau and its residents are not affected by the evacuation for now.

The authorities emphasised that this is a precautionary evacuation considering further potential weather developments.

With another heatwave expected, temperatures are forecast to rise and humidity to fall. The fire service explained that the heat and wind are hampering efforts to tackle the flames, although they have not spread further since the weekend.

Thousands of emergency personnel remain engaged in fighting the remaining pockets of fire.
