Mexican President Proposes Dual Citizenship Ban For Presidents, Governors

MEXICO CITY, Aug 28 (NNN-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum unveiled an initiative to amend the constitution to require candidates for president, governor or head of government of Mexico City to hold only Mexican citizenship, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

“The goal is to ensure that any Mexican citizen who wishes to become president of the Republic, governor or head of government is solely Mexican and does not hold any other citizenship,” Sheinbaum said at a press conference on Thursday.

The current wording of the constitution does clearly determine whether candidates with dual citizenship must renounce their second citizenship before registering as candidates, the president said. The proposed amendment should eliminate this uncertainty, she added.

Sheinbaum said that after renouncing the second citizenship, the candidates would have to retain only Mexican citizenship.

Sheinbaum previously linked the need for such a reform to the issue of dual citizenship involving former Tamaulipas governor Francisco Garcia Cabeza de Vaca, who was born in the US state of Texas to Mexican parents.
