Kathmandu Faces Severe Cooking Gas Shortage After Floods

KATHMANDU (Nepal),  Aug 31  (NNN-Anadolu) --  Long lines of residents formed in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Monday, Aug. 31, as citizens waited to obtain liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders following severe Rasuwa flooding that intensified existing cooking gas distribution strains,  Anadolu Ajansi reported.

Compounding existing supply shortages and long wait times, destructive flash floods near the Nepal-China border destroyed infrastructure and swept away LPG tanks, prompting local residents to wade into floodwaters to retrieve floating cylinders.

The flooding damaged transport corridors and supply logistics, creating additional obstacles for delivering necessary items.

The disaster struck on Aug. 26 when a glacier on Nepal’s Mount Langtang Lirung fractured at an altitude of about 5,200 metres, triggering an ice-rock avalanche that developed into a massive debris flow and swept through valleys along the border.

The huge surge in water, along with mudslides, devastated Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Kavre and the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, as well as burying the Gyirong border area on the Chinese side.
