Two Earthquakes Felt Across Parts Of Java, East Nusa Tenggara

JAKARTA, Sept 14 (NNN) -- Two earthquakes struck waters off Java and East Nusa Tenggara in eastern Indonesia on Monday morning, with tremors felt across several areas, according to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

According to data on the agency’s website, the stronger of the two, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, struck at 8.42 am local time, with its epicentre in the sea about 156 kilometres (km) southeast of Malang Regency in East Java and at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The agency said tremors from the earthquake were felt across several parts of East Java, including Pacitan, Tulungagung, Blitar, Lumajang, Jember, Kediri, Bondowoso, Batu and Banyuwangi, as well as Badung on the neighbouring island of Bali.

Earlier, at 5.40 am, it said a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck waters about 56 kilometres northwest of Ruteng in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, also at a depth of 10 km.

Many people indoors in Manggarai and neighbouring West Manggarai felt the shaking, while Ngada, another regency in East Nusa Tenggara, reported weaker tremors.

The two earthquakes were among 15 of varying magnitudes recorded across Indonesia and listed by BMKG’s real-time monitoring system by 9.55 am local time on Monday.

The other earthquakes ranged from magnitude 2.4 to 4.8 and were recorded in several areas, including Flores, Sulawesi and Sumba.
