Another Volcano Erupts Simultaneously With Anak Krakatau - Geological Agency

JAKARTA, Sept 6 (NNN-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Simultaneously with the massive eruption of Anak Krakatau in Indonesia, Semeru volcano on the island of Java erupted as well, sending a column of ash of about one kilometre (0.6 miles) above its summit, the Geological Agency of the country's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said on Sunday, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

Semeru erupted on Sunday at 7.51 am local time (00:51 GMT).

The eruption was recorded by a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimetres and a duration of 102 seconds, the geological agency said.

Earlier in the day, Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted as well, ejecting an ash column approximately 400 metres (about 1,300 feet) above its summit.

The continuous eruption of Anak Krakatau has been observed since the late evening of September 4. It has been accompanied by rumbles, vibrations, and lava fountains. According to satellite data, volcanic ash rose to approximately 14.6 kilometres above sea level.

On Sunday, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto instructed the government, military, police, rescue, and other relevant agencies to continue monitoring the situation and ensure preparedness for further developments.
